Cave Houses in Falassarna
Description
The summer residences are located on a narrow and elongated plot of land overlooking to the west the famous and touristically developing beach of Falassarna in Crete. The brief called for the construction of two holiday residences, each featuring a shared living area, three bedrooms with private bathrooms, and spacious outdoor areas with swimming pools.
The significant topographical slope of the plot and the dramatic surrounding landscape contributed to the core concept of the project, which was to create semi-subterranean residences, parallel to the sea view. The building volumes are separated, with the natural terrain integrated between them to maintain privacy and minimize disruption to the landscape.
The two residences are arranged linearly in plan, as a progression of spaces, transitioning from open-air areas to partially covered zones and fully enclosed rooms. The rear and rooftops of the houses are embedded into the ground, while the front is entirely open to the view. Designed with environmental consciousness, these two residences benefit from natural ground insulation, ensuring optimal climate control and reduced energy consumption. Archetypical architectural elements, as skylights and courtyards to the rear of the residences, enhance lighting and ventilation throughout the interior space.
The materials for the construction of the two residences are concrete and glass, with the intention of achieving simplicity, integration, and minimal impact on the unique landscape. . This raw, minimalist use of materials also evokes an informal, relaxed atmosphere suited for a vacation residence, fostering the deepest possible connection to the place and nature.
